iPhone IPSW Flash Process – Step-by-Step Guide

Flashing an IPSW file on an iPhone is a method used to either upgrade, downgrade, or restore iOS firmware. This can be helpful for troubleshooting, jailbreaking, or reverting to a stable iOS version.

Here’s how the process works:

What You Need:

  1. A Mac or Windows PC

  2. Latest version of iTunes or Finder (macOS Catalina and later)

  3. Official IPSW file for your iPhone model (download from trusted sources like ipsw.me)

  4. Lightning cable to connect your iPhone to your computer

Flashing IPSW – Detailed Steps

1. Download the Correct IPSW

  • Select your iPhone model

  • Choose the iOS version you want to flash

  • Make sure it’s signed (green mark). Unsigned versions won’t work without advanced methods.

2. Install or Update iTunes (Windows/macOS Mojave and earlier)

  • Make sure iTunes is up to date

  • On macOS Catalina or later, use Finder instead of iTunes

3. Back Up Your Data

  • Use iCloud or iTunes/Finder to back up your iPhone to avoid data loss

4. Connect iPhone to Computer

  • Use a certified Lightning cable

  • Trust the computer if prompted on the iPhone

5. Enter Recovery or DFU Mode (Optional but Recommended)

Recovery Mode:

  • Press and release Volume Up

  • Press and release Volume Down

  • Press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen

DFU Mode (for advanced users):

  • Requires precise button timing to bypass boot chain – often used in advanced restore scenarios

6. Flash the IPSW File

  • Open iTunes/Finder

  • On iTunes: Select your device icon

  • Hold down Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click Restore iPhone

  • Choose the IPSW file you downloaded

  • Confirm and let the process complete (do not disconnect the iPhone)

7. Wait for the Restore

  • The flashing process can take 10–20 minutes

  • Your iPhone will restart when done

  • Follow the on-screen setup instructions

Notes and Warnings

  • Apple only allows flashing of signed IPSW files unless using third-party tools or exploits

  • Flashing IPSW erases all data (unless updating, not restoring)

  • Jailbroken devices may lose their jailbreak

  • If the flashing fails, check the IPSW compatibility or retry in DFU mode

Use Cases for IPSW Flashing

  • Fixing boot loops or iOS bugs

  • Removing beta software

  • Downgrading iOS (if signing is still open)

  • Restoring after failed jailbreak
